Api Base Camp Trek: Exploring Nepal’s Far-West Himalayan Gem

Nepal Outdoor Expeditions || November 5, 2025

Mount Api Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s least trekked Himalayan destinations, located in the Darchula District of Far-Western Nepal. This trek provides a rare and unique journey into one of the country’s most peaceful and unexplored regions. While most trekkers focus on the Everest or Annapurna region, the Api Nampa Conservation Area remains quiet and largely untouched. The region lies close to India’s western border and Tibet to the north.

The trek is named after Mount Api (7,132 m), the highest peak in far-western Nepal. Some mistakenly refer to it as Api Saipal, but Saipal Himal is a separate peak in Bajhang District. Both are part of the Western Himalayan range, but they feature distinct trekking routes and landscapes.

Along the trail, trekkers pass through remote settlements where life moves at a slow, peaceful pace. They encounter warm and hardworking communities, including Chhetri, Thakuri, Byansi, and Tibetan-influenced people, who welcome visitors with genuine hospitality.

The Api region offers a deep connection with nature and culture. Trekkers walk through quiet forests, across flowing rivers, and through terraced fields, with views of Api, Nampa, and Saipal Himal visible from the first day. The serene environment often allows one to walk in silence, listening only to the wind, waterfalls, and birds.

Many trekkers and guides note that the Api Base Camp Trek is very different from popular trails like Annapurna, Mardi, or Everest Base Camp. It is quieter, more remote, and offers unique landscapes and cultural experiences. Many even find it more beautiful and memorable than these well-known treks.

The region is also popular among international climbers, who use it to train and acclimatize before attempting higher 8,000m peaks, such as Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Manaslu.

Nepal Tourism Board has waived climbing permit fees for 97 peaks in the remote Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces for the next two years. With rising costs on popular routes, hidden peaks like Mt. Api, Nampa, Saipal, and Jethi Bahurani have become attractive options.

For those seeking a remote and authentic adventure, the Api Base Camp Trek offers an unmatched experience. With Nepal Outdoor Expeditions, trekkers can explore this hidden corner safely and comfortably, following a well-organized route that connects them with mountains, nature, and local life at every step.

How to Reach the Location

The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. From Kathmandu, travelers take a 1-hour domestic flight to Dhangadhi, the main city in far-west Nepal. After arriving in Dhangadhi, the trip continues by road to Gokuleshwor and then to Makarigaad, which serves as the starting point of the Api Base Camp Trek.

Transportation Options

  • By Air: Domestic flights operate regularly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi. From Dhangadhi, a private jeep or local bus transports travelers to Gokuleshwor.

  • By Road: A long-distance tourist bus or private jeep can be taken from Kathmandu, but this option is not recommended as the journey takes approximately 30 hours, which can be tiring at the start.

  • Trail Start: The trek officially begins from Makarigaad. From Gokuleshwor, travelers drive via Latinath to Makarigaad, and from there the trail continues on foot.

Nepal Outdoor Expeditions manages all transportation logistics, including domestic flights, jeeps, porters, and transfers, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Detail 10-day Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (1-hour flight) and Drive to Gokuleshwor, Darchula

After breakfast in Kathmandu, we’ll head to Tribhuvan International Airport (Domestic Terminal) for a morning flight to Dhangadhi — the gateway to Nepal’s far-west region. The one-hour flight offers scenic views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Kanjirowa ranges. After landing, you’ll feel the warmth of the Terai lowlands.

From here, we’ll continue by private vehicle to Gokuleshwor, Darchula, which takes about nine hours. We’ll stop for lunch at Khanidanda, a beautiful hill station. The route passes through the Chure hills, local markets, and rural towns, giving insights into western Nepal’s culture.

We’ll pass through Kailali, Doti, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, and Bajhang districts before reaching Gokuleshwor in the evening. Overnight stay at API Nampa Hotel with a warm meal and rest.

Day 2: Gokuleshwor to Makarigaad by Jeep (3 hrs) – Trek to Ghusa Village (4–5 hrs)

We’ll drive toward Makarigaad through Latinath, enjoying scenic roads and rural landscapes. The 2–3-hour jeep ride ends at Makarigaad, the last vehicle-accessible point, where we’ll stop for lunch. From there, our trek begins — walking uphill toward Ghusa Village for about 4–5 hours. Overnight stay at a cozy homestay in Ghusa, surrounded by traditional houses and warm hospitality.

Day 3: Ghusa – Sitti – Khaikot to Shimar (7–8 hrs trekking)

After breakfast, we begin trekking from Ghusa toward Shimar. Within an hour, you’ll see the stunning Mt. Api in the distance. The trail passes through scenic villages, hilly grasslands, and farmlands. We’ll stop for lunch at Sitti Village before continuing to Shimar. Overnight stay at Shimar.

Day 4: Shimar to Dhaule Odar to Api Base Camp (6–7 hrs trekking)

The trail climbs gradually along the Chaulani River, passing alpine forests and mountain scenery. Near Bhallekhola (2,268 m), you’ll see Jethi Bahurani Himal on the right and Mt. Api straight ahead. After 6–7 hours of trekking, we reach Api Base Camp, surrounded by breathtaking peaks. Food and accommodation are available at the base camp.

Day 5: Explore Around Api Base Camp and Return to Dhaule Odar

We start early to enjoy sunrise views from the base camp. After photos and relaxation, we trek for about 30 minutes to the Chameliya River’s source and then continue to Kalidhunga Lake (4,200 m), a 2–3-hour hike. After exploring, we return to the base camp for lunch and later trek back toward Dhaule Odar (or Bhallekhola) for an overnight stay.

Day 6: Contingency Day – Rest or Optional Hike to Ringdepani Taal (Approx. 4,000 m)

This is a flexible day for rest or acclimatization. Trekkers can opt for a moderate hike to Ringdepani Taal, a tranquil alpine lake surrounded by glacial valleys and mountain views.

Day 7: Dhaule Odar – Shimar – Sitti Village

After breakfast, we retrace our route toward Shimar and continue to Sitti Village. The village, known for its terraced hills and stone houses, showcases local mountain life and craftsmanship. Along the way, observe villagers cutting grass on steep slopes — a daily activity in the hills. Overnight stay at Sitti Village.

Day 8: Sitti – Ghusa – Makarigaad – Gokuleshwor

After breakfast, we trek back through Ghusa to Makarigaad. From there, a private jeep will take us to Gokuleshwor, giving your legs some rest. In the evening, check back into the API Nampa Hotel, enjoy a warm meal, and rest comfortably.

Day 9: Gokuleshwor – Dadeldhura – Dhangadhi

After breakfast, we drive toward Dhangadhi, stopping for lunch in Dadeldhura along the way. Dhangadhi is one of the largest cities in Nepal’s far west. Upon arrival, explore local markets, meet friendly locals, and enjoy regional cuisine. Overnight stay in Dhangadhi.

Day 10: Dhangadhi to Kathmandu (1-hour flight)

On the final day, we take a morning flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, marking the end of your 10-day Api Base Camp adventure. On your departure day, we’ll drop you at the airport for your onward journey.

Tips & Recommendations

  • Physical Preparation: Although this trek is moderately challenging, regular hikes, cardio, and strength training in the weeks leading up to the journey make it much easier and more enjoyable.

  • Acclimatization: The highest point reaches around 4,200 meters, so altitude awareness is essential. Move steadily, follow your guide’s advice, stay hydrated, and rest whenever needed.

  • Weather Awareness: Spring and autumn offer the best conditions with clear skies and stable weather. Summer brings monsoon rains, while winter can mean heavy snow and freezing temperatures.

  • Respect Local Culture: The far-western region of Nepal has a rich cultural heritage. Dress modestly, respect local customs, and always ask before taking photos of villagers.

  • Pack Smart: Remote trails have limited and expensive supplies due to difficult transportation access. Carry extra batteries, snacks, cash, and essential trekking gear suited to your needs.

  • Travel Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance includes medical evacuation coverage and protection for high-altitude trekking.

  • Choose the Right Operator: For remote treks like this, select a trusted trekking agency (such as Nepal Outdoor Expeditions) that manages permits, logistics, safety, and supports local communities.

  • Slow Down & Enjoy: The Api Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and untouched adventures. Take your time to appreciate the breathtaking mountain views, pristine wilderness, and authentic local culture.

Api Base Camp is situated in the far-western region of Nepal, within the Api Nampa Conservation Area in the Darchula district, close to the India-China border region.

2. How Difficult Is the Trek to Api Base Camp?

It is considered moderate to challenging due to its remoteness, less-developed trail infrastructure, and long trekking days, with altitudes reaching approximately 4,200 to 4,300 meters.

3. What Is the Highest Elevation Reached?

The base camp for Mt. Api lies around 4,200 to 4,300 meters above sea level.

4. When Is the Best Time to Go?

5. What Permits Are Required?

You need the Api Nampa Conservation Area entry permit and a TIMS card.

6. How Do I Start the Trek?

Usually, you fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi, then drive via the Mahakali Highway to Gokuleshwor, and begin trekking from Makrigaad.

7. What Kind of Accommodation Is Available?

You will find simple teahouses, guesthouses, homestays, and camping options. The higher and more remote you go, the simpler the services. Overall, there are decent accommodation facilities during the trek.

8. What Kind of Food Can I Expect?

Meals are basic Nepali fare: rice and lentils (dal bhat), noodles, soups, locally grown potatoes, grains, and eggs. Vegetarian options are generally available. Due to the long walks and high altitude, even simple Nepali food tastes delicious.

9. Is the Mobile Phone Network Available?

Network coverage is limited or absent in many higher sections. During our last visit in November 2025, there was a network available up to Simar.

10. How Much Does It Cost?

Yes, this route offers spectacular views of peaks like Mt. Api, Nampa, Mt. Jethi Bahurani, and Bobaye when the skies are clear, especially during spring and autumn.

13. What Wildlife Might I See?

14. Can I Do the Trek Independently (Without a Guide)?

It’s not recommended for international trekkers. The trail is remote, less marked, and logistics, such as permits, accommodations, and transportation, can be complex. A licensed guide and a reliable trekking operator are advised.

15. What Happens in Case of Bad Weather or Altitude Issues?

A trustworthy trekking company will provide contingency plans, including extra buffer days, safe descent options, and emergency evacuation protocols.
